INSPIRATION

Xanadu has been a source of inspiration for many different people, items and events.  It has been referred to in several TV shows and movies.  There have even been some cover versions and remixes of songs from the film.  Here is a partial listing of things the movie has inspired.


INFLUENCES


In 2005, British DJ Meck did a remix of Leo Sayer's Thunder In My Heart, and the video is a tribute to the opening scene of Xanadu:





Bluewater Productions used the Xanadu poster as inspiration for their Tenth Muse comic.


There is a nightclub in Melide, Spain, called Xanadu.  They have merchandise which features the movie logo on it,
including Chinese-style fans and an energy drink!  We can only imagine what a Xanadu energy drink would taste like...


Ever wanted to see Napoleon Dynamite dance to Xanadu?  Here's your big chance:



There was an 80's themed club in Los Angeles called Xanadu.  You can see some of their ads on Don's site here.


Superfan Ken Anderson held Xanadu-themed exercise/dance classes on July 20 and 21, 2002.  Don-O has

In 2004, the band Stimulator did a cover version of Magic for the soundtrack

the Japanese monster Domo-kun dancing to Xanadu with a bunch of cheerleaders:



On November 21, 2000, ELO released a cover version of their own song, Xanadu,
on their Flashback compilation album.  You can listen to a sample of it here.


The Olivia Project featuring Paula did an album of Xanadu remixes.


In 1985, Brian Soares did a cover of Magic.


In 1981, Menudo, featuring a young Ricky Martin, did a cover of Xanadu.



REFERENCES


Xanadu has been referred to in the movies Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), Drowning Mona (2000), Free Enterprise (1998),
Gas Food Lodging (1992), Hudson Hawk (1991), and The Orkly Kid (1985).  It was spoofed in Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002).


In 2002, Mull Historical Society recorded a song called Watching Xanadu:



On November 5, 2000, on the TV show Ed, episode "Better Days," Carol drowned her sorrows over breaking up with Nick with a Xanadu marathon.


On the February 8, 1996, episode of Friends, "The One Where Ross and Rachel... You Know," Phoebe criticizes Chandler
and Joey for being lazy and watching too much TV, then notices Xanadu is on the TV and starts watching with them.
