In the summer of 2000, director Annie Dorsen staged a one-night-only live production of Xanadu at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Actress Amy Pietz and her husband, Kenny Alan Williams, were in the audience and liked it so much that they decided to produce it as a play in Los Angeles. On October 11, 2001, Xanadu Live! opened at the 99-seat Gascon Center Theatre in Culver City, California, with a cast of 24 lip-synching to the soundtrack. The show ran until November 11, and was hugely successful and sold out almost every night. Some attendees included RuPaul; original Xanadu dancers Russell Clark, Shelley Pang, and Tony Selznick; and producer Rob Ahrens, who was inspired by the show to start a five-year process of acquiring the rights for an off-Broadway production of Xanadu, which eventually became the Broadway production. It is believed by some that this show sparked a new interest in the movie, leading to many screenings across the U.S. Xanadu Live! was also performed at the Miner's Theatre in Collinsville, Illinois, on September 26 to 29 and October 6 to 9, 2002.
